The Cathedral joined with people across the world in observing Remembrance Sunday at the 8.15am service on 10th November 2019. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month is universally associated with the remembrance of those who died when the guns of the Western front fell silent at 11am on 11th November 1918 after more than four years of war. At the end of the service after a special prayer, the Organist played ‘The Last Post’
which is a bugle call played during commemorative ceremonies to serve as a tribute to the dead. This also traditionally marked the end of the working day in the Military. Subsequently, a minute’s silence was observed which was followed by the organ playing ‘The Reveille’ also known as ‘Rouse’ that signifies the waking up to a new day. The service ended with the Recessional Hymn ‘Jehovah Thou Hast Promised’.
